How to Play

White moves first; click a piece to see its legal moves, then click a highlighted square to play. Each piece moves in its classic pattern — rooks on ranks and files, bishops on diagonals, knights in an L — and the goal is checkmate: attacking the enemy king so no legal move can save it.

All the special rules are here: castle to tuck your king safely behind its rook, capture en passant, and promote a pawn that reaches the last rank. The move list records the game as you play, and Undo lets you take back a blunder while you learn.

Tips & Strategy

Fight for the center with your pawns, develop knights and bishops before moving the same piece twice, and castle early — an exposed king loses games fast. Before every move, ask what your opponent’s last move threatens. In the endgame, activate your king and push passed pawns: promotion wins more games than brilliancies.
